Astigmatism

Imperfection of corneal curvature

Astigmatism is an optical imperfection of the eye, where the cornea has a different curvature than a perfect sphere. The cornea takes the shape of a rugby ball rather than a soccer ball. This makes all objects blurred.  The amount of blur depends on the amount of astigmatism, and whether there is associated myopia or hypermetropia.
